‘All you need is coffee and mascara’ Helen Fielding used to say. And she was right!
We’ll leave coffee for another time, today we are focusing on mascara, the most widely-used and iconic make-up product of all time.
Have you ever noticed that a touch of mascara is all it takes to transform your eyes? They seem to take on a new light and intensity.
The question is: do you know how to apply mascara?
Because it’s easy to put on but knowing how to apply it makes the difference.
In this article, we reveal all the tricks for choosing the right mascara for you and how to apply it properly for a false eyelash effect, without making your lashes stick together and without smudging. In other words, your lashes will be PERFECT.
1. HOW TO CHOOSE A MASCARA
When choosing a mascara, do you read the information on the tube carefully?
‘Volume’, ‘high definition’, ‘elongating’ are not words plucked out of thin air just because they sound good, they are there to help you to understand whether you have found the mascara best suited to your lashes.
1.1 ELONGATING MASCARA
Elongating mascara allows you to considerably lengthen your lashes and leaves your eyes instantly more intense and open.
If you are not one of those lucky folks who naturally have mile-long lashes, you really ought to try it.
How to recognise it?
Let’s put it like this, if you were doing a blindfold test and had different mascaras in front of you, remember the basic rule that the wand of an elongating mascara has bristles that are not very coarse and tends to be flexible. This helps to not apply too much product and to distribute it evenly from the roots of the lashes to the ends.
If you have very fine lashes, we suggest using a silicone wand, which holds less pigment.
1.2 VOLUMISING MASCARA
Volumising mascara is designed to elongate the lashes and increase their volume.
If you have short, fine eyelashes that require greater thickness and a three-dimensional effect, this is the type of mascara for you.
How to recognise it?
Its texture is less fluid than other mascaras, because its formulation contains less water. The product has a denser, more full-bodied appearance, perfect for producing that volumising effect on your lashes.
Wands come in different shapes, but any volumising mascara worth its salt will have a wand with bristles that are quite close together, in order to separate out the lashes so that the product can be distributed evenly.

1.3 CURLING MASCARA
If your eyelash curler is your best friend, you always use one and you’d like to take a break from it, we suggest using a mascara that creates the same visual effect, with one aim: to elongate and curl your lashes.
A curling mascara must first and foremost be able to reach and elongate the smallest lashes, before curling them upwards.
How to recognise it?
Usually, the wand is curved, and the bristles not too close together. It is able to coat each eyelash and give it a fuller appearance. The texture of the product is not too dense, in order to avoid weighing the lashes down, making it difficult for them to curl upwards.

2. HOW TO APPLY MASCARA PROPERLY
And now for the serious business. You have bought the ideal mascara for your lashes.
Now all you have to do is learn how to apply it properly.
You’ve guessed it, there are a few tricks that will prevent you from becoming a panda with mascara on your eyelids and will allow you to get the best from your product and the results it can deliver.
Let’s start with the basics. The first rule with any mascara is to avoid introducing air into the tube, by inserting and removing the wand quickly. This will create tiny pockets of air that could cause the product to dry out quickly.
The most effective technique is to turn the wand very slowly as you extract it. This allows it to take up the right amount of product and will prevent clumps from forming.
Second step. Position yourself head-on to your mirror and distribute the mascara over your eyelashes with light zig-zag movements, if you need to separate them out and given them greater definition or by combing them from the bottom upwards, if you need more volume, as this deposits more product at the roots, giving the lashes a thicker appearance.
2.1 HOW TO APPLY MASCARA WITHOUT MAKING THE LASHES STICK TOGETHER
There are various factors to be considered in order to apply mascara without the lashes sticking together.
The formulation: the lighter it is, the greater the probability it will not clump.
The amount of product applied: be sure to remove the excess product and avoid applying too many coats.
2.2 HOW TO APPLY MASCARA WITHOUT SMUDGING
We could write a whole textbook on how to apply mascara without smudging it on the eyelids. But we’ll spare you the long-winded explanation and stick to revealing the two most common techniques.
The first consists in positioning yourself head-on to the mirror, angling your lashes downwards and raising your eyebrows a little, as if frowning.
The second technique consists in holding a finger of the opposite hand to the eye being made-up on the eyelid and pulling it slightly upwards. (A very precious tip for anyone with sagging eyelids).
One golden rule is to comb the lashes upwards with delicate movements that are not too brusque.
If you get mascara on your eyelids, allow the product to dry and then remove it carefully, it will come off easily.
2.3 HOW TO APPLY MASCARA FOR A FALSE LASHES EFFECT
The false eyelash effect that we are all obsessed with can be achieved, provided you follow these tips:
- wait a minute between coats. This makes it easier to layer the product over the lengths and ends.
- bat your eyelids gently, so that the movement, combined with the effect of the wand, combs the lashes properly.
2.4 HOW TO APPLY MASCARA TO ELONGATE THE EYE
To elongate the eye and obtain two fans instead of lashes, the strategy remains the same: emphasise the outer part of the lashes, by insisting on the last few lashes. This little trick will make your eyes look even longer.
2.5 HOW TO MAKE LASHES LONGER USING MASCARA
Remember the two techniques, ‘zig-zag’ or ‘combing’? In this case, the solution is the former.
Pass the wand from the roots to the tips with a zig-zag motion, from bottom to top, insisting on the ends. Your eyelashes will be visibly longer.
2.6 HOW TO APPLY MASCARA TO THE LOWER LASHES
Applying mascara to your lower lashes will give your eyes even greater intensity. Before you start, wait for the mascara on your upper lashes to dry.
Once it has dried, try placing a tissue under your lashes to avoid smudging.
