THE SKEPTIC’S GUIDE TO FACE SERUMS: WHY YOU SHOULD USE THEM, HOW TO CHOOSE THEM, THEIR FUNCTIONS, WHAT THE MUST-HAVES ARE AND HOW TO USE THEM.
We are well aware that you have often thought that face serums are products that your skincare routine can do without. But read this article and you will realise that you do need a serum, but it must be the right one for you.
FACE SERUMS: WHY?
Acids work better in aqueous solutions In creams they are ‘stripped of their powers’; even Vitamin C is highly susceptible and readily altered in water whereas, for example, other ingredients are perfectly happy in oils.
Serums help the formulator to delivery active ingredients that are as tricky as they are precious, in the best possible manner.
LET US EXPLAIN
The ingredients of creams include:
- • Humectants, which hydrate skin.
- • Film-forming ingredients, which prevent dehydration at epidermal level by sealing moisture inside the dermis and preventing it from evaporating.
The film-forming part often (very often) consists of silicones and, when it does not, it consists of plant oils and/or natural film-forming substances.
How can the active ingredients penetrate if the skin is covered by a film?
They struggle.
SERUMS ARE CONCEIVED AS A CONCENTRATE OF ACTIVE INGREDIENTS THAT IS ABLE TO GO STRAIGHT TO THE PLACE WHERE IT HAS TO ACT.
And that alone is a good reason for loving serums!
HOW TO CHOOSE A FACE SERUM
Now you probably can’t wait to get your hands on a serum, but...HOW SHOULD YOU CHOOSE ONE?
If you are looking for a good quality serum, it shouldn’t have silicones among the first few ingredients in the INCI (list of ingredients found on the pack). If its effects are based on silicones, it is not a good quality serum!
It should be formulated with certified active ingredients, those that really work, otherwise it won’t benefit your skin.
Then there are serums designed to deliver the famous ‘wow effect’. These are serums that only have a temporary effect on skin. This category includes:
• Firming serums that form a smooth film over the skin that only lasts a few hours
Are they harmful? No, but their effect barely lasts an evening.
• Plumping serums containing microspheres of hyaluronic acid that fill in microwrinkles to deliver a plumped effect, again only for a few hours.
• Glow-effect serums that make the skin radiant. The latter are usually iridescent oils or contain strands of various kinds designed to brighten and they can often be mixed with foundation to give additional radiance.
THE SERUMS THAT ARE INDISPENSIBLE (AND WHY)
Just a little quick premise before delving into the details.
You’re probably wondering: can I use a serum without using a cream too?
The answer is yes. And no. Let us explain: Serum is a kind of booster that helps potentiate our treatments. But...Is your skin shinier than usual because it’s summer?
Then you can use a hydrating serum instead of a cream.
Do you think serum alone is sufficient but you have VERY dry skin? No. If your skin feels tight, you need to use a combination of both.
So the real answer is to listen to your skin.
Now we can get started.
Hyaluronic acid. For all ages and all skin types; it is a true hydration booster and firms the skin without weighing it down. Our #hydra serum has a formulation containing low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid and stimulates collagen production.
Vitamin C. ideal if you have dark spots, discolouration and marks left by spots. Our serum is called Wonder Roll, it brightens and is ideal for dull skins and skin with dark spots. Vitamin C serums can be used morning and evening without any problem at all!
Retinol. Retinol stimulates collagen synthesis and is a panacea for mature or impure skins and skins with dark spots. It should be used with caution, preferably in the evening and preferably during the winter, because it can cause photosensitivity and should always be combined with sunscreens.
Veralab’s solution is called Ultra Retinol.
Face oil for very dry skins, to be used as a night cream or in addition to a day cream, such as my Magic Oil.
SERUMS AND SPOTS
If your skin is impure but very delicate and you don’t know how to treat it because it becomes irritated very easily, the solution could be a serum formulated to tackle spots, blackheads and other minor blemishes but with a mild action.
You can try our #perfect serum, which contains a small amount of salicylic acid (like Luce Liquida) but is suitable for even the most sensitive skins.
If, on the other hand, your skin is not reactive or prone to redness, a retinol serum could be ideal for you.
Now you have all the advice you need, do our test to find out which serum is right for you, as well as taking a look at all Veralab’s serums, of course!
