MELASMA, CHLOASMA, MELASMA MOUSTACHES AND SUN SPOTS: HOW TO RECOGNISE THEM, WHY THEY APPEAR AND HOW TO TREAT THEM

Or what can happen to your skin if you expose yourself to the sun without adequate protection.

Everyone likes a tan but then, in September, it’s back to reckoning with our skin.

  • WHAT CAN I DO FOR MY WRINKLES?
  • HOW CAN I TREAT SUN SPOTS?
  • THE SKIN ON MY LEGS IS VERY DRY, HOW CAN I MOISTURISE IT?

This is the right post for evaluating and avoiding damage caused by reckless exposure to sunlight.

Sun spots: Melasma, chloasma and melasma moustache

LET’S START WITH SUN SPOTS.

The most common types are MELASMA AND CHLOASMA, which are brown spots with a poorly defined margin, that usually have symmetrical distribution on both sides of the face.

IN THIS CATEGORY, THE FOLLOWING DESERVE A SPECIAL MENTION:

MELASMA MOUSTACHE

Melasma, chloasma and melasma moustache: the causes

• HORMONES, what can I say? We women are governed by hormones, so all hormonal changes cause us strife. Dark spots can be caused by:

  • - the contraceptive pill
  • - the menopause
  • - pregnancy

• PHOTOSENSITISATION, the skin becomes more sensitive to exposure to sunlight due to, for example:

  • - the use of particular medicines, of which antibiotics and antihistamines are among the most common;
  • - skin irritations. A tortured pimple or skin irritated by waxing can turn into a dark spot (the notorious moustache is often caused by waxing);
  • - use of scented products, even ordinary body cream.

• HAVING AN OLIVE PHOTOTYPE is not a cause but considerably facilitates the occurrence of hateful spots.

Melasma, chloasma and melasma moustache: the remedies

  • • PREVENT THEM BY APPLYING SUNSCREEN AND KEEPING IN THE SHADE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE AT RISK FOR ANY OF THE FACTORS LISTED ABOVE.
  • • WAIT AND SEE HOW THEY EVOLVE: this type of sun spot usually gradually fades on its own.
  • • GO AND SEE A DERMATOLOGIST and never try DIY remedies, like lemon juice, bicarbonate and the like. You could make the area even more photosensitive and make the situation worse.
  • • IF YOU DEVELOP DARK SPOTS, AVOID EXPOSURE TO THE SUN, AND EVEN UNPROTECTED EXPOSURE TO COMPUTER SCREENS.

I can recommend products containing Vitamin C, which undeniably help to even out the complexion and make it more radiant; or specific, mild acids, with a clinically-tested lightening effect.

From my line, I can suggest a cream and a serum with Vitamin C (Wonder C Cream and Wonder Roll serum), but there are countless products available on the market. And the Whitening Acid Treatment from our The Technologist line is perfect on residual dark spots.

Sun spots on the skin: age spots, causes and remedies

CAUSES FOR THIS TYPE OF SPOT:

  • • AGEING
  • • EXCESSIVE EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT

CURES FOR THIS TYPE OF SPOTS

  • • PREVENT WITHOUT OVERDOING EXPOSURE
  • • CONSULT A DERMATOLOGIST
  • • LASER TREATMENTS OFTEN HELP TO RESOLVE THIS TYPE OF SPOT

So, how should we deal with exposure to the sun?

Smart guide to using sunscreens

Let me start by saying that this year we decided to expand our range of sun products, precisely in order to dedicate each part of the body a suitable and specific product and you will find them all here.

  • ·  Sunscreens must be applied evenly over the whole body, even under clothing.
  • ·  Cream must be re-applied every 80 minutes, even if it is water-resistant, it still needs to be re-applied.
  • ·  Cream must be re-applied after each swim.
  • ·  Even if you have applied 50+ sunscreen, it is not recommended to stay out in the sun for 12 hours, or even 8.
  • ·  Lips should also be protected, try our SPF 50 protective lip gloss, it leaves lips soft and slightly coloured, just like a gloss.

Always care for your skin.
