DOUBLE CLEANSING: THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE
The much-talked-about double cleansing is certainly not a recent discovery. Double cleansing is a Korean skincare technique that has revolutionised facial skincare all over the world.
So it’s nothing new, but we can at least take the merit of having been one of the first to talk about it in Italy. Let’s say our @estetistacinica (our very inquisitive founder) has loved it, explained its qualities and benefits, and made it to all intents and purposes her flagship.
A bit like when potatoes arrived in America.
And then, of course, we formulated the products to carry it out in the best possible way.
ON THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANSING
Let’s talk about film.
The HYDROLIPIDIC FILM, of course.
This layer of sebum, dead cells and bacteria has the task of preserving the skin’s hydration, i.e. it prevents the water naturally present in our skin from evaporating to the exterior.
The fact that you define your skin normal, dry, combination or oily depends on your hydrolipidic film, how rich in sebum it is, how much of it you produce and how fluid it is.
Washing your face means cleaning off and removing what builds up on the skin:
- - In the morning cleansing has the purpose of getting rid of what was produced while you were sleeping, like excess sebum, night cream residues, dead cells and toxins (which the skin expels at night, when it regenerates). It also prepares the skin for the cosmetics that will be applied.
- - In the evening its task is to remove the make-up, pollutants and excess sebum that would end up clogging and inflaming the pores, resulting in the appearance of pimples and speeding up the skin ageing process. And once again it prepares the skin to absorb the active ingredients of serums and creams.
DOUBLE CLEANSING: 2 STEPS
Double cleansing is a deep yet mild type of cleansing.
It is carried out in 2 STEPS:
STEP 1: CLEANSING BY AFFINITY
WHAT: Remember the principle whereby like dissolves like? Right, the first step in double cleansing, consists in using an oil-based facial cleanser (our Olio Denso is ideal) that acts by “affinity” to remove excess sebum, impurities, smog and make-up.
HOW: Start with dry a face and hands. Dispense a small amount of Olio Denso and massage gently over the face, persisting on the T-zone and the parts of the face where the most make-up is applied. Olio Denso melts in contact with the heat of the hands and face, and its gel texture becomes oily, removing dirt and leaving a pleasant feeling on the skin. If you wish to pamper yourself a little longer (YOU DESERVE IT), wet your fingertips slightly and continue to massage the Olio Denso to form an emulsion: its texture will become milky, thereby boosting its hydrating and nourishing effect.
STEP 2: CLEANSING BY CONTRAST
WHAT: The second step consists in using a product that acts by “contrast”, a foaming cleanser with surfactants (our Spumone is ideal), to remove every last trace of the first step.
HOW: Add a dose of Spumone to the previously-applied layer of Olio Denso, massaging the face gently to amalgamate the two products. Remember, WE’RE WATCHING YOU: you only need a small amount of Spumone (1 or 2 pumps are sufficient), you don’t need a foam party in your bathroom every morning.
Rinse well with lukewarm water.
DOUBLE CLEANSING: THE PRODUCTS AND THE ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
They are certainly no mystery.
OLIO DENSO: Our iconic multi-purpose gel-oil that transforms into milk when it comes into contact with water.
In double cleansing, it constitutes the first step and acts as a make-up remover oil for removing every last trace of make-up and impurities. Formulated with a blend of plant extracts (all strictly natural) with the precious addition of Vitamin E. The active ingredients have a powerful elasticising and antioxidant effect and leave skin soft and infused with an unforgettable fragrance.
SPUMONE: is a very mild and soft-textured foaming cleanser, that is used in the second step of double cleansing. Its plant extracts have nourishing, hydrating, antioxidant and even anti-ageing properties.
DOUBLE CLEANSING: WHO ITS SUITABLE FOR
All skin types, generally.
Particularly, normal/combination and sensitive skins.
AND THE OTHERS?
- - Oily skin: all clear! Strange but true, it is precisely oily cleansers that remove sebum best!
- - Mature skin: the oily cleanser step is a panacea because it delivers the oils the skin is lacking and as well as cleansing it, it plumps and nourishes the skin.
- - Dry skin: benefits because it receives more nourishment. In this case, it is best to only use it in the evening, or to replace Spumone with Acqua Micellare, which is milder.
- - Ultra sensitive or acne or rosacea-prone skin: although it is recommended for sensitive skins, in more specific cases it is always best to consult a dermatologist.
A NOTE REGARDING DOUBTS AND QUESTIONS:
Oily cleanser and foaming cleanser are two OPPOSITE AND COMPLEMENTARY products in the sense that, when used synergistically, they compensate one another perfectly.
Magic?
Actually, there’s a reason for this:
- - the oil modulates the dryness caused by the foaming cleanser.
- - the foaming cleanser limits the greasiness of the oily cleanser.
Our SPUMONE is extremely mild, but you still need to measure the quantities and adjust the recipe to suit your skin type, the season/climate and also the time of day.
Think of it as a rather creative recipe for which you have the ingredients but not the quantities:
Firstly, CONSIDER YOUR SKIN TYPE:
- Normal skin: two pumps of OLIO DENSO and two pumps of SPUMONE.
- Combination skin: MORE OLIO DENSO and LESS SPUMONE.
- Oily skin: if you’re not wearing make-up, use SPUMONE alone (add OLIO DENSO as the 1st step for removing make-up or if the skin needs a deeper, nourishing cleanse).
- Dry or sensitive skin: use OLIO DENSO alone (or a mild 2nd step with SPUMONE, adjusting the amount of product to suit your skin type - if it feels tight, rinse the Olio Denso with water alone).
Then CONSIDER THE SEASON/CLIMATE:
- In summer: the skin tends to sweat and become oily, so MORE SPUMONE and LESS OLIO DENSO.
- In winter: the cold dries the skin so MORE OLIO DENSO and LESS SPUMONE.
- In spring/autumn: equal amounts of OLIO DENSO and SPUMONE. That’s the theory.
