ALL ABOUT EPSOM SALTS: DISCOVER THE PROPERTIES, BENEFITS AND BANDAGES AGAINST WATER RETENTION AND CELLULITE.
They possess myriad properties, have many uses and are becoming an essential part of any beauty routine. What are we talking about? Epsom salts!
As you know, here at Veralab, we use them a lot because of their ultra-draining action, which is useful for reducing swelling and water retention. This is why we have used them for our SALI SUPERDRENANTI and to impregnate our WRAPS.
But first things first: what are Epsom salts?
EPSOM SALTS: WHAT THEY ARE AND COMPOSITION
Let’s be clear from the word go: we’re not talking about any old salt, it’s not cooking salt.
In actual fact, it’s not even really a salt, but a mineral compound, epsomite, or magnesium sulfate heptahydrate.
Epsom salts take their name from their town of origin, Epsom in England.
They have a characteristic taste and are bitter as well as being salty. They usually take the form of white crystals, but can have other colours, depending on the presence of other metals.
EPSOM SALTS: PROPERTIES AND BENEFITS
In the world of beauty therapy, thanks to the magnesium they contain, Epsom salts are appreciated for their purifying and swelling-reduction properties. In actual fact, they are an effective remedy against cellulite and water retention, because by reducing swelling they improve skin problems.
HOW TO EPSOM SALTS WORK?
Salt attracts water by osmosis. For people with water retention and cellulite it has an osmotic effect: when it comes into contact with the legs and swollen areas, the salt attracts and draws out the water that has accumulated in the interstitial and intracellular spaces.
And this takes place through the skin, exactly like when we sweat, and eliminates excess water.
In addition to their draining effect, Epsom salts have other beneficial effects:
- · They are muscle relaxants: they reduce muscle tension and provide relief from pain caused by physical exertion.
- · They reduce skin and scalp sebum.
- · They have a purifying effect on the liver and intestine and are a natural remedy against constipation (when taken by mouth).
HOW TO USE EPSOM SALTS
Epsom salts are readily available and can be purchased in pharmacies, herbalist’s shops or online.
Let’s take a look at the uses of Epsom salts and how to use them.
EPSON SALT BATHS
The most convenient way to exploit the draining action of Epsom salts is to dissolve them in a bath tub of water and get in.
A bath in salty water not only counteracts water retention but also favours muscle relaxation.
Here’s how to prepare the perfect home-made draining bath:
- o Fill the bath tub with warm water (enough to be able to immerse almost the entire body and warm, not boiling, to avoid an excessive absorption of magnesium by the skin. Around 37 °C is about right).
- o Dissolve about 400-500 grams of Epsom salts (measure them out carefully depending on the amount of water and your weight).
- o Add a few drops of an essential oil of your choice, according to their properties and your requirements (for example lavender, rose or eucalyptus oil).
- o While in the tub, exfoliate your skin using a brush, to open the pores and absorb the salts better.
- o Enjoy your bath for at least twenty minutes, but, for best results, wait 40 minutes.
You can always sing to pass the time!
Other uses for the salts dissolved in water:
- · Epsom salts for hair: they are effective both against the sebum of greasy hair and on frizzy hair/dandruff. How to apply them? If you have greasy hair, add a small amount of the salts to your shampoo, leave for a few minutes and then rinse as usual. If you have frizzy hair, add the salt to your conditioner, mix and warm the mixture in your hands, leave it on the hair for 20 minutes, then rinse.
- · Epsom salts for the face: they help keep oily skin under control and remove impurities and pollution. Use them dissolved in water when rinsing your face or, for a scrub-like effect, try mixing them with your cleanser.
- · Foot-baths with Epsom salts: a bona fide panacea, not only because they reduce swelling, but also because they relieve tension, soften the rough skin on heels and remove unpleasant odours.
They are also effective in the presence of bruises, insect bites, sprains and arthritis.
All problems that often affect the feet.
VERALAB PRODUCTS CONTAINING EPSOM SALTS
Let’s start with SLIM_ME BATH, our draining bath salts. In addition to Epsom salts, SLIM_ME BATH contains natural Horsetail and Slippery Elm extracts, which promote the microcirculation and therefore counteract fluid stagnation.
If used regularly, they have a sculpting, detoxifying and swelling-reducing effect that will help you to fight cellulite (if you have any) or simply drain excess fluids whenever you feel swelling caused by heat, periods or simply a sedentary lifestyle.
In addition, the magnesium they contain brings benefits to the musculoskeletal system and reduces oedema.
Epsom salts are also the undisputed stars of Veralab wraps:
SLIM ME wraps, our masterpiece consisting of single-use gauzes soaked in a formula containing highly-concentrated Epsom salts.
Once again, they have one, very potent action: draining stagnated fluid, consequently reducing swelling.
Being wraps, you can arrange them as you prefer to target your most critical points: legs, stomach and/or arms, depending on where the water retention is most evident.
Then we have SLIM_ME ULTRASHAPE wraps, which have a different formulation and a dual action.
In addition to the classic draining action (exerted by the Epsom salts and Sodium chloride), ULTRASHAPE wraps contain a multi-tasking active ingredient consisting of Valine, Lysine and Glycerophosphocholine that gradually sculpts the body, reducing fat deposits and preventing adipocytes from increasing in size (one of the main causes of cellulite).
Now all that’s left for you to do is choose the right solution for you to enjoy all the benefits of this very potent natural ingredient.
Now we have said and written everything there is to know about Epsom salts, it’s over to you!
